Over twenty years ago, this shu pu-erh was compressed and set off on its long journey through time.
An aged pu-erh in the style of Old Yi, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.
The Chinese woman from whom this tea was purchased explained that by 2004, there was practically no such raw material left. This is precisely why such cakes are considered to be as close as possible to the very pu’er of the early 2000s.
Over the years, the market has changed beyond recognition. Old pu-erhs have become collector’s items, and as demand has grown, a huge number of copies and counterfeits have appeared. Today, you can find dozens of ‘old’ Tong Qing Hao on online marketplaces, but by no means all of them are genuinely from that era.
Time cannot be faked.
It remains in the worn packaging, in the aroma of the dry leaves and in the very character of the tea.
Over more than twenty years, this shu has acquired depth, richness and nobility. Its flavour intertwines notes of old wood, dried fruit, dark honey, camphor and a long, tranquil aftertaste, which is quite multifaceted due to the ageing process – it all depends on your own associations)
A tea from an era when such raw materials were still available, and when pu-erh was bought primarily for the pleasure of tea drinking, rather than as a substitute for coffee 😌
